OpenSDS Organizes First Mini-Summit and Sets Up End-User Advisory Committee to Share Software-Defined Storage Requirements

Recently at Open Source Summit Europe, the OpenSDS community organized its first mini-summit and set up an End-User Advisory Committee (EUAC).

For its inaugural mini-summit, the OpenSDS Technical Steering Committee (TSC) invited experts from Huawei, Vodafone, NTT Communications, and Yahoo! Japan to share their software-defined storage (SDS) requirements, architecture, and the latest progress on community projects. Participants from the University of Helsinki, KPN, Telekom Srbija, Red Hat, and many other companies took part in various discussions and showed their support for the positioning and planning of OpenSDS.

The OpenSDS community’s goal in setting up the EUAC was to allow the voices of end-users to be heard in the open source community and to differentiate OpenSDS from other communities by leveraging these voices to guide its development. Vodafone, Yahoo! Japan, and NTT Communications were all announced as founding members of the EUAC, and KPN was invited to join the committee. The founding members all shared their SDS-related pain points and requirements, on the basis of which OpenSDS has already developed a roadmap and determined the requirements for the Alpha version of the OpenSDS 2017 community project.

OpenSDS aims to provide a standard software-defined storage control plane to simplify users’ storage systems. In 2016, Huawei worked with a number of vendors (IBM, Dell EMC, and Hitachi) and several of its key customers (Vodafone, Yahoo! Japan, and NTT Communications) to establish the software-defined storage open source community. Since then, the OpenSDS community has set up two decision-making institutions: the EUAC and the TSC, with Huawei’s Steven Tan as president and IBM’s Rakesh Jain as vice president. The EUAC is expected to elect its president in December 2017.
